Species Specifics: Major Mitchells Cockatoos (Cacatua leadbeateri) also known as Leadbetter Cockatoos, are found in Australia and are hands down one of the most beautiful of all the Cockatoo species. The are medium sized Cockatoos, 15 to 16 inches in length. Primarily pink birds with white wings and back. The crest has stripes of pink and yellow seen when the crest is erect. Major Mitchells,while magnificent, do not make as good of a companion as some other Cockatoos do. The females make the better companions of the two, but females are the less common of the sexes. They are capable of little speech and can be moderately noisy. As companions, they need a large cage, a lot of toys and a lot of socialization to keep them social. As a side note, Major Mitchells are very difficult to pair up and breed. The males, even if they are tame with humans, can be highly aggressive with their females.They are not for the novice breeder and great care should be exercised if considering pairing up two single birds or setting up a pair to breed.
