Species Specifics: Vinaceous Amazons (Amazona vinacea) are found in South America. They have a limited range, found mostly in Southern Brazil, northern Argentina and eastern Paraguay. They are medium sized Amazons, appx 12 inches in length, very easily distinguished from other Amazon species by the purple scalloped chest and dark red beak. The rest of the body is predomnantly green except for a small red patch on the forehead. In the US, they are not commonly available. Vinaceous Amazons are protected under the Endangered Species Act and interstate commerce is prohibited without a special federal permit which is meant for breeding and conservation purposes and it is not intended for pet purposes. Because of this, birds can be purchased within the state they were bred but cannot be transported across state lines. As pets, Vinaceous are very calm and gentle. Their docile nature makes them one of the best companion Amazons, but their availability is limited. Vinaceous Amazons need a large cage with lots of toys to chew. They need constant enrichment and socializing with their family.
