Species Specifics: Red Tail Black Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus banksii) are native to Autralia. They are also known as the Banksian Cockatoo. They are known in the wild to live in huge flocks and are found in two separate locations of Australia.. one in Northern and one in South-West. The Red Tails are unique in that they are dimorphic (meaning males and females are identified by different coloration or markings). Males are black birds except for the outer tail feathers which are vivid red. The females are black with gold speckles covering their bodies. The tail is more orange then red. Juveniles resemble females and do not molt into their adult plumage until approximately 2 years old. Red Tail Blacks are ver rare in US aviculture and there are very few birds being held outside of Zoological institutions. They are very difficult to breed in captivity and are not readily available as companions. On the rare occasion they are available to the open market, they are very expensive. They need very large cages with lots of large wood toys and perches to provide enrichment and to keep their strong sharp beaks occupied.
