Species Specifics: Black Palm Cockatoos (Probosciger aterrimus) are probably one of the most stunning of all the Cockatoo species. They are found in Australia and New Guinea. They are easily recognized by their large size, black plumage, erect crests and large intimidating beaks and red skin facial patch, which changes color with the birds mood. They are found primarily on New Guinea with a small population in Cape York, Australia. There are three subspecies of Palm Cockatoos. The Aterrimus (P.a.atterimus), which is the smallest of the three subspecies and the only one found in Australia. The Goliath Palm (P.a.goliath) is significantly larger then the Aterrimus. The Stenolophus Palm (P.a.stenolophus) is very similar in size to the Goliath except it has narrow crest feathers and is found only in northern New Guinea. Stenolophus is not believed to be represented in United States aviculture. (Corrections will be made if facts to the contrary are provided.) Palm Cockatoos are very intelligent and need lots of stimulation. They need a very large cage and lots of large wooden toys and perches to chew for both enrichment and to keep their large beak trimmed. As a companion, Palm Cockatoos are very sweet and gentle. They are not known to be talkers although some have been known to say a few words. Due to their sweet and playful nature, a well socialized Palm Cockatoo baby can be an excellent family companion. They are relatively quiet but do have a shrill call they use when playing or when in breeding mode. Instead of screaming, they communicate in a series of clicks, beeps and whistles.
